International Day of Education - 24th January 2023

International Day of Education is observed on 24th January 2023, this being the fifth International Day of Education to be celebrated. https://en.unesco.org/commemorations/educationday A variety of celebrations take place on this day with global events organized at UNESCO Headquarters in New York and Paris.

Covid-19 has disrupted mainstream education globally and at the same time it has also opened up new insights and possibilities, presenting us with new challenges, technologies, and opportunities. It is important that we recognize and adopt these changes in educating and preparing youths.
The aim of having the event is to promote awareness about education as a fundamental human right and a public responsibility

Education is a human right, a public good and a public responsibility.

Without inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong opportunities for all, countries will not succeed in achieving gender equality and breaking the cycle of poverty that is leaving millions of children, youth and adults behind.

Today, 258 million children and youth still do not attend school; 617 million children and adolescents cannot read and do basic math; less than 40% of girls in sub-Saharan Africa complete lower secondary school and some four million children and youth refugees are out of school. Their right to education is being violated and it is unacceptable.

2023 CELEBRATIONS

This 24th January 2023 celebration in Bangkok, under the theme "to invest in people, prioritize education" seeks to build on a global momentum. Education must be prioritized to accelerate the process toward all the Sustainable Development Goals against the backdrop of a global recession, growing inequalities, and the climate crisis.

The event in Bangkok, supported by the Diplomatic Council ( UN Consultative Status) and jointly organized by Chulalongkorn School of Integrated Innovation (BASCii) and GEN Thailand serves as a platform to showcase the most important transformations that have to be nurtured to realize everyone’s fundamental right to education and build a more sustainable, inclusive and peaceful future. It will generate debate around how to strengthen education as a public endeavor and common good, how to steer the digital transformation, support teachers, safeguard the planet and unlock the potential in every person to contribute to collective well-being and our shared home.

Event Format

The first part of the celebration is a general overview of the UN International Day of Education theme with two presentations on alternative education projects in Thailand that includes a Pitching demo by high-school students presenting their ideas to the audience. A panel discussion will follow after the break where embassy representatives are invited to share about their education projects in their countries with the speakers and the audience.
